For children who want to do serious tricks, jump high, and have full use of the mat surface without being directed back to the middle, rectangular is the more capable option. For a 7-year-old who wants to have fun in the garden after school, round is fine and honestly easier to control.

Round trampolines need equal clearance in all directions. A 10ft round trampoline needs about 13-15ft of clear space every way around the frame — which means a roughly square or circular area in your garden.
Rectangular trampolines fit a different garden shape. They can use a space that's longer in one direction but narrower in the other — a corridor-shaped garden that can't accommodate a 12ft round might fit a rectangular model that's 12ft by 8ft, depending on the specific dimensions. Check the actual product dimensions rather than the headline size, because rectangular models vary significantly in their aspect ratio.
The clearance rule still applies around all sides of a rectangular model, so you can't push it flush against a fence. But if your garden is genuinely long and narrow rather than roughly square, rectangular might actually work better from a space perspective as well as a performance one.

Is a rectangular trampoline more dangerous than a round one?
Not inherently more dangerous, but it requires more jumping skill to use safely. The higher bounce and absence of the self-correcting centre pull means a jumper needs better body awareness to stay in control. For younger children who aren't yet confident on a standard trampoline, round is the safer starting point. For older children with experience, the difference in risk is minimal if the trampoline has a proper enclosure net and is used sensibly.
Can adults use both types?
Both types have models with weight limits suitable for adults. Check the specific model's maximum weight rating — it's not always obvious from the size alone. Rectangular models used for adult or serious teenage jumping should have weight limits appropriate to the user; don't assume a 100kg-rated trampoline will perform the same as one rated to 150kg just because they're the same shape.
