Trampoline Assembly Guide

Assembling a garden trampoline takes most people between one and two hours. It is not complicated — there are no specialist skills required and no unusual tools — but it is physical work, and it is significantly easier with a second person helping. Trying to do the whole thing alone is possible for smaller models. For anything 12ft and above, it is genuinely difficult to hold parts in position and connect them simultaneously without a second pair of hands.

This guide covers what to expect at each stage: not brand-specific instructions (those come in the box and vary by manufacturer) but a walkthrough of the general sequence, where the hard bits are, and what most people wish they had known before they started.

What you will need

Most trampolines include everything needed in the box. Before you start, check that you have:

  • A spring hook tool — almost always included; this is the tool that makes spring attachment manageable. Do not try to attach springs without it.
  • A Phillips screwdriver — for any bolts on enclosure pole brackets or frame connectors, depending on the model.
  • A clear flat area at least as large as the trampoline's diameter — to lay out the parts and assemble the frame ring before it goes vertical.
  • A second person — particularly for the spring attachment stage and for lifting the assembled enclosure poles.

Good footwear. Assembly involves kneeling and crouching repeatedly, and the frame sections have edges that can scratch legs if you are in shorts. Nothing elaborate — just closed-toe shoes and clothes you do not mind getting grass stains on.

Step by step

The general assembly sequence for most round garden trampolines follows the same order, regardless of brand:

Frame ring first. The frame ring is made from curved steel tube sections that connect end-to-end to form the outer circle. Lay these out on the ground in sequence and connect them — they usually push together with a connector at each joint. Some models have bolts at these joints; others click together. Get the full circle together before moving on.

Legs second. The legs attach to the frame ring, typically at evenly spaced intervals. They fold down to create the stand. On most models, the legs slide into sockets on the underside of the frame ring and are secured by a pin or bolt. Attach all legs before standing the frame up — it is much easier to attach them while the frame is flat on the ground.

Stand the frame up. With legs attached, you can tip the frame up onto its legs. This is where a second person helps — one person holds the far side while the other pushes up. For larger trampolines, this can take two or three attempts to get the frame level and all legs sitting flat on the ground.

Springs and mat. This is the stage most people underestimate. Thread the mat into position — it hangs from the spring attachment loops on the frame ring — and begin attaching springs. Start with four springs positioned at compass points (north, south, east, west), then work outward from each, alternating sides to keep even tension across the mat as you go.

Enclosure poles. These slot into the frame ring in the designated pole positions (usually at the spring-free gaps in the spring pattern). They angle inward slightly on most modern models. Some poles are single-piece; others are telescoping sections that extend to height. Secure at the base according to the model's instructions.

Enclosure net. Thread the net over the poles according to the instructions. Most nets attach at the top of each pole and at the bottom around the frame ring or mat edge. Pull the net taut as you work around. Secure the entry point (zip or overlap) and check that the net sits evenly at all points.

Spring cover pad. The foam pad that covers the spring zone goes on last. It presses down onto the frame and spring zone, typically held by straps that loop under the frame. The pad needs to sit flat and cover the full spring zone with no gaps at the edges.

The springs are the hard part

Attaching the springs is the stage that takes the longest and causes the most frustration. Each spring has to be connected at both ends — to the mat's attachment loop and to the frame's spring hole — and pulled taut enough to keep the mat under proper tension. On a 12ft trampoline, there are typically 72-96 springs. On a 14ft, more.

The spring hook tool makes this manageable. Without it, you are trying to stretch springs by hand — possible for the first twenty springs while the mat tension is low, increasingly difficult as you add more springs and the mat tightens. The tool gives the mechanical advantage to pull each spring into position without tearing up your hands.

Work in opposite pairs. Attach a spring, then the spring on the opposite side of the mat. Then the spring 90 degrees from the first. Then its opposite. Continue working outward from these four anchor points, always going to the opposite side after each spring. This keeps the mat centred as tension builds and prevents the mat from pulling to one side.

The last ten or fifteen springs on a larger trampoline are noticeably harder than the first. The mat is under high tension by this point and each remaining spring gap is pulling hard on the frame. This is the stage where the spring tool earns its keep — and where a rest and a second set of hands can make the difference between a frustrating half hour and a straightforward finish.

How long does it actually take?

Realistic time estimates, for people assembling for the first time with a helper:

  • 6ft-8ft: 45 minutes to 1 hour
  • 10ft-12ft: 1 to 1.5 hours
  • 14ft-16ft: 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Rectangular trampolines: add 20-30 minutes to the equivalent round trampoline time

These times assume you have done it once before. A first assembly typically takes 25-30% longer as you work out the system and read the instructions. Second time — if you ever disassemble for storage — is noticeably faster.

First-time setup tips

Assemble the trampoline in its final position. Moving a fully assembled trampoline — even a 10ft round — is awkward and risks damaging the mat or frame. The legs dig into grass, the net catches on things, and the whole structure is difficult to grip. Decide where it is going before you start, and assemble it there.

Level ground matters. A trampoline on a noticeable slope develops uneven tension across the mat — springs on the uphill side take more load than those on the downhill side. Over time this causes uneven wear. If the only available spot has a slight slope, it is worth levelling it or finding an alternative spot rather than accepting the incline.

Do not over-tighten bolts on frame connections. Tighten until snug and secure — not until the threads start to resist. Frame connector bolts that are over-tightened can strip the receiver and become difficult to remove later. If you plan to disassemble the trampoline for storage in future years, snug-but-not-forced bolts are easier to undo.

Keep the instructions. They are usually printed on paper that ends up in the recycling immediately after assembly. Keep them somewhere — a folder in a kitchen drawer, a photo on your phone. If anything ever needs to be disassembled or a part needs ordering, the part numbers and diagrams in the instructions are much faster to work with than guessing from memory.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need two people to assemble a trampoline?

For 6ft and 8ft trampolines, one person can manage assembly with care — though it is slower. For 10ft and above, two people is strongly recommended. Standing the frame ring up onto its legs, attaching the last springs under high mat tension, and getting the enclosure poles level are all significantly easier with a second pair of hands.

Is a spring tool necessary?

Yes. The spring hook tool that comes included with the trampoline is essential for attaching the later springs, when the mat is under tension. Without it, the final springs are extremely difficult to attach without injuring your hands. Do not attempt assembly without it.

Can I assemble a trampoline on decking or paving?

Yes, if the surface is level. Assembly on hard surfaces is the same process as on grass. The consideration is that the surface below the mat is now solid — a fall through a worn or damaged net onto paving is more serious than a fall onto grass. Ensure the net is in good condition and the area immediately around the trampoline has adequate clearance.
